Using the Coverage Calculator
Use the Coverage Calculator to make a planning-level estimate of the free-space or land-mobile radius supported by a transmitter and receiver link budget. It helps compare assumptions; it does not predict site-specific coverage.
Enter the link assumptions
- Enter transmitter power and operating frequency.
- Enter transmit and receive antenna gains, choosing dBd or dBi consistently with the published antenna figures.
- Enter receiver sensitivity and a fade margin appropriate to the planning case.
- Enter feedline loss. If you do not know it, estimate it with the Feedline Calculator; the default of 0 dB assumes negligible loss.
- Enter TX and RX antenna heights above ground and choose the receiver environment loss.
- Choose antenna type. For a sector or directional antenna, provide horizontal beamwidth, boresight azimuth, and service-area bearing so the calculator can account for off-axis direction.
Choose a propagation model
Auto uses Okumura–Hata only when its planning range is valid. Hata is an empirical land-mobile model with supported frequency, height, and distance ranges shown by the calculator. Free-space LOS is a theoretical unobstructed reference. It is not a fallback for obstructed paths. Longley–Rice / ITM is listed as not yet implemented and will not calculate.
Choose the Hata area class (suburban, urban, or open/rural) for the path; this is separate from the receiver environment loss. Optional site-coordinate planning can add site context where supported.
Read and use the result
Review the estimated radius, EIRP at the antenna, allowable path loss, and selected model together. If inputs fall outside the selected model’s validity, adjust them or explicitly choose a supported model. Copy results, download CSV, or apply the assumptions to the System Builder when available.
Limits: This is a planning estimate. The models do not account for site-specific terrain, buildings, clutter, Fresnel obstruction, or complete antenna-pattern effects. Do not treat the radius as a coverage guarantee or commissioning acceptance. Ask Telewave engineering for a site-specific link budget.
